Misty's Twilight // Book Review
Howdyyyyyy, y'all!
Today's post is a book review of Misty's Twilight.
This book is by Marguerite Henry. It was published by Aladdin in 1992. It is 142 pages long.
I love Marguerite Henry as an author. She's clever, unique, and writes magical, believable stories. You can see the scenes perfectly without flaw. Her stories are based off true stories and are braided together into perfection.
Misty's Twilight is fun, short, and would be an easy read for younger children. The best way to read a book like this is to read it as a family! Misty's Twilight is cozy and inspiring, and even if it might be a little "young" for readers like me, I still thoroughly enjoy it. That means the author spins a great story!
This little book follows the story of how Dr. Sandy Price, the owner of Stolen Hours Farm, has always loved the story of Misty, the Chincoteague pony in Marguerite Henry's Misty of Chincoteague, and wants to go to Chincoteague, Virginia to get her own ponies, maybe a living likeness of THE Misty! So she hauls her two kids, Pam and Chris, from Florida to Virginia to see the historical Pony Penning Day and buy some of the Chincoteague foals in the auction the following day.
Pony Penning Day is a few days of fun and feast in July at Chincoteague Island. Fishers and shopkeepers turned cowboys boat across to Assateague Island and round up all the Chincoteague Pony herds, drive them across the water, and into corrals for the following day's auction. It is a safe and humane - and conventional - thing to let people have a taste of the ponies from the wind and sky of Assateague. By conventional, I mean it helps keep horse population down so the island isn't overrun.
Sandy and her kids buy their ponies, and hurry home with four Chincoteague ponies, including one who is the great-granddaughter of Misty herself. Soon, this granddaughter is bred to a son of Bold Ruler to create the versatile Misty's Twilight.
Then the story follows Twilight's life. She's a horse with nine lives. She gets to try many different "jobs" until finally settling on the one that suits her best, which I won't give away for the sake of people who want to read it *winks* It follows the cute, true story of how Twi overcomes the spurning pintos used to get to become a winning champion.
I'll say this is a classic all kids should read at least once in their life. For younger children under 10, they might want to read it with their mommy or daddy because of a few "cowboy" words that are uttered harmlessly by some of the characters. These words are not the worst somebody could say, but I know some families appreciate not having these words meet the ears of their youngsters. Kids over 10 could probably finish this adorable novel in 1 to 2 days.
I give Misty's Twilight four and a half stars.
