Book Review // "The Last Bride"

Of her Old Order parents' five daughters, Tessie Miller is the last to marry. She has her heart set on Amishman Marcus King, but Tessie's father opposes the match.

Impetuously, Tessie and Marcus elope to the English world, then return to Hickory Hollow to live as singles, trusting they'll convince the Millers to give their love a chance. But when the unthinkable happens, Tessie faces the almost-certain censure of the People. Will she find a reason for hope in spite of her desperate plight?

This book.....was amazing. I had begun to read Beverly Lewis' book, The Tinderbox, and thoroughly disliked it. I decided to give her writing another chance and dove into The Last Bride....and was sucked into a fabulous story of grace, forgiveness, love, and hope.

The Last Bride is part of a series called "Home to Hickory Hollow." I am dying to get my hands on another of Beverly Lewis's novels, especially from this series! There are 327 pages in The Last Bride and it is published by Bethany House. It is a contemporary fiction novel with slight romance.

To summarize this incredible book, Tessie Ann Miller falls in love with Marcus King and elopes with him, only to come across a deadly secret revolving around their marriage. Suddenly her life is spiraling a part. After she finds out this secret, everything goes downhill from there. An unimaginable thing happens, followed by Tessie realizing another thing; something that puts both joy and severe worry in her heart.

Tessie is a strong-willed girl who is struggling with the fact her father is against her marriage to Marcus. She doesn't know why, and finds out too late the reason for her father refusing to change his mind. By then she is already married to Marcus - secretly. After the unimaginable happens, I thought everything would be okay and she could move on, confess to the People, and find new hope and a new love.

But no.

Beverly Lewis put this unimaginable twist in, and followed this twist with yet another twist that makes you gasp, sigh, and shake your head. "Oh, no," you think. "Now what?"

It seems Tessie just might not be able to make it. The suspense, the worry, the brilliant writing and fantastic story weaving!

Alongside Tessie's plight, you follow her sister Marty's story. Her father practically arranged her marriage to Sylvan, a man she is not in love with but obeys her father and marries. You follow her story of struggle, hope, pain, and the beauty of love blossoming from a place of despair.

Overall, The Last Bride portrays one strong-willed woman and one who has been thrust into a situation she cannot control. Tessie Ann and Marty learn to have new hope and love in places where they thought it could not unfurl. It truly is beautiful, and the way grace comes in at the end made this book one of my favorites. It is now placed on my Favorite Shelf in my bookcase. I rate it 5 stars; the ending is extremely satisfying.

Not only does The Last Bride have an amazing plotline, it also has great research for anyone who is thinking of writing a story about the Amish!

I hope you enjoyed this book review! I tried not to give away the ending because it is such a good book, it shouldn't be spoiled *winks*

Happy Sunday!

    1. I don't think Beverly Lewis is super well-known by readers of contemporary and historical fiction, since she focuses on Amish fiction. However, she is a New York Times bestseller author. Thanks for reading!
