"The Penderwicks on Gardam Street"
Howdy, y’all!
Yes, another book review *sighs* *winks* I have nothing else really to post, unless I find another horse breed . . . hmmm, maybe I’ll do that.......
Anyway, I’m going to continue with Jeanne Birdsall’s books. She has a five-book series all about the Penderwicks.
The first book, The Penderwicks, is a whirlwind adventure of the four sisters’ trip to Arundel in the mountains of Massachusetts. The Penderwicks on Gardam Street is the second book of the series, and starts up with a tear-jerking prologue about the girls’ mother before entering a tornado of delightful plotting to stop Mr. Penderwick’s dating.
The Blurb on the Back of the Book *laughs*:
The Penderwick sisters are home on Gardam Street and ready for an adventure! But the adventure they get isn’t quite what they had in mind. Mr Penderwick’s sister has decided it’s time for him to start dating -and the girls know that can only mean one thing: disaster.
Enter the Save-Daddy Plan - a plot so brilliant, so bold, so funny, that only the Penderwick girls could have come up with it!
My review:
Amazing, spectacular, and once more a book that will swallow you in mirth and spit you out refreshed and daring to read the whole thing over again! Again I will repeat, these girls are the most clever you could get.
In The Penderwicks on Gardam Street, the girls set out to stop their father from dating, resulting in the most comical endings, along with eventual harmony. I love the way this author writes. I love each part she introduces: when Jane and Skye are at the Aztec show and disaster strikes, and when Skye is determined to avenge her sister in a soccer game. Jeffrey is sadly not in this book, but other characters are introduced and I cherish them all.
(((This book does switch POVs between the four sisters. And there is a little bit of girl-has-crush-on-boy and boy-has-crush-on-girl and some dating talk, but it is all harmless and very simple and cute. Nothing like a romance genre, since this is just contemporary fiction and the crushes of a thirteen/fourteen-year-old girl.)))
Snippet:
“The walk from Cameron Middle School to Goldie’s took ten minutes, and Rosalind was on her last minute now. She could see on the corner ahead of her the gray clapboard house, with its wide porch full of toys. And now she could see - she picked up her pace - a small girl alone on the steps. She had dark curls and was wearing a red sweater, and Rosalind ran the last several yards, scolding as she went.
‘Batty, you’re supposed to stay inside until I get here,’ she said. ‘You know that’s the rule.’
Batty threw her arms around Rosalind. ‘It’s okay, because Goldie’s watching me through the window.’
Rosalind looked up, and it was true. Goldie was at the window, waving and smiling. ‘Even so, I want you to stay inside from now on.’
‘All right. But -’ Batty held up a finger swathed in Band-Aids. ‘I just was dying to show you this. I cut myself during crafts.’
Rosalind caught up the finger and kissed it. ‘Did it hurt terribly?’
‘Yes,’ said Batty proudly. ‘I bled all over the clay and the other kids screamed.’
‘That sounds exciting.’ Rosalind helped Batty into her little blue backpack. ‘Now let’s go home and get ready for Aunt Claire.’ ”
I'll post when I can again with The Penderwicks at Point Mouette as soon as I can!
