The Reason to Live

Hey, y'all!

Today I get the privilege of sharing with you The Reason to Live by Sami. There are 3 parts, and today I'll be sharing Part 1.

The Reason to Live
By Sami

Part 1 The Desire

Tears falling down my cheeks, I ducked into a dark alley. My breath froze in the frigid
suburban Chicago air. My heart pounded in my chest as realization hit me. I was alone for the second time in my life, with nowhere to go, no one to turn to.
Life. What a joke. To me, there is really no reason for it. The first time I was alone was when my parents abandoned me when I was a baby. The only reason I am alive now is because of Blade. He cared for me as I grew up. He taught me things that no one else took the time to tell me. But growing up with Blade as my parent was not easy. He was only ten when he joined a gang. Then he found me.
Now, a few problems come with being a gang. First off, you have to know all the ‘Laws of the Gang’ and can never break them. Second, you can never completely trust anyone. Someone is always ready to pounce on you when they have a chance. And both had just happened to me.
Blade and I had come back to HQ late in the night, and King, our gang leader, was yelling in the face of a helpless kid, maybe the same age as me, that he had dragged in to be questioned. There was scarcely a reason for him to be interrogated that I saw. No sound ever came from his lips. His eyes only held a trace of fear in them.
The second I looked at that kid, something stirred within me. Something too unexplainable to explain. Something too deep to understand. But nevertheless, it was still there. Blade must have felt it too, for he had the same look on his face that I did.
In that boy’s faded gray eyes, I saw something I had never seen before. It was almost a look of compassion. He looked into King’s face with confidence, he wasn’t afraid of what King might do to him.
I just stood there for a minute, staring. A desire that had tugged at my heart all my life drew me towards the boy. His presence seemed to take with him something that I had never felt before. It sent a shiver up and down my spine.
Before I knew what I was doing, I had stomped over to the kid, untied the rope around his hands, and dragged him outside. He ran one way, and I the other.

I knew that it was no use going back. I had broken the ‘Law.’ I wouldn’t be accepted there anymore. They had wanted me gone long before, now they had what they wanted. Only Blade would have forgiven me. But it was too late. I had made up my mind. I was going to find out why the kid was different.

Again, bravo, Sami!
